Gregan ignoring critics

George Gregan insists that he does not listen to the thoughts of David Campese.

George Gregan is prepared to stand firm and stand tall as he attempts to lead Australia out of the nightmare rut that they currently find themselves in.

Six defeats on the trot has resulted in mass changes to the Wallabies' old guard, as coach Eddie Jones freshens up his squad by including eight players under the age of 23.

Gregan is one particular veteran of the side who has survived though, much to the disbelief of certain former Aussie legends - namely David Campese.

Campese has never been one to bite his tongue, but Gregan insists he is not affected by the abuse that is being aimed in his direction.

"Not from David," said Gregan. "David says a lot about everything. I'm certainly not worried from comments he's made about it."

The Wallabies know that patience is wearing thin as the grand name of Australia in the rugby world is being tainted by a horrific run of results.

Defeat to arch rivals England on Saturday would prompt extra distain from their loyal followers, and Gregan admits that a severe lack of confidence is spreading like a virus throughout his side.

"You're not playing the way you'd like to play, there's just not the rhythm and continuity in everyone's play which we are used to when we play well," lamented the all-time record international cap holder.

With the England pack boasting a record weight, totalling more than 55 stones just in the front row, Gregan knows to expect an inevitable challenge upfront.

Traditionally, Australia's strength has been playing the game with ball in hand, but the Wallaby skipper believes that his troops could shock the hosts on Saturday.

"We are prepared for a big contest at set-piece time. It's definitely an area which has always been one of their strengths so they will look to use that.

"But we expect them to want to play with a lot of width as well. They have some very good running backs who like to use space when they get opportunities so it's going to be an interesting Test match."
