Wales rocked by Jones operation

Ryan Jones requires shoulder surgery and has been ruled out of the Six-Nations.

Wales' chances of defending their Six-Nations title have been dealt the greatest of blows after Ryan Jones was ruled out for the rest of the season.

The powerful back row was sensational as a latecomer to the British Lions tour, returning home with a big reputation after almost single-handedly taking the fight to the mighty All Blacks.

However, Jones requires surgery on his shoulder and coach Mike Ruddock now faces the prospect of a Six-Nations campaign without the Ospreys man and experienced lock Brent Cockbain.

The 24-year-old's club boss Derwyn Jones confirmed: "This is devastating news for Ryan, the Ospreys and Wales.

"Ryan made a massive impact last season, with his progress culminating on the Lions tour where many observers commented that he was the stand-out player of the tour.

"It is vital that this procedure is undertaken in order to protect his long-term career. We have taken the best possible medical guidance and they have advised that Ryan is best served by undergoing this surgery."

It is hoped that the operation will finally correct a 'core instability in the shoulder', which has prevented the Jones from stringing any games together since the summer.
