Hinshelwood calls it a day

Worcester's Ben Hinshelwood has been forced to retire because of a back injury.

Scotland international Ben Hinshelwood has been forced to retire from rugby union because of a long-standing back injury.

Two months ago Hinshelwood announced that he was taking a break from international rugby in a bid to cure the problem.

However, after taking further medical advice he has decided to call time on his career with immediate effect.

The Worcester centre won 19 caps for Scotland, making his Test debut against Canada in 2002 and featuring in four matches at the World Cup a year later.

"This is very sad news for everyone connected with the club," said Worcester rugby director John Brain.

"Ben has been a key contributor to what we have achieved so far at Worcester and I would like to place on record my thanks for everything he has done for us, both on and off the pitch.

"However, we fully respect and support his decision, as his long-term health has to be his primary concern. We wish him every success for the future."
