Lewsey earns the plaudits

Shaun Edwards praised Josh Lewsey after Wasps' win against Leeds Tykes.

Wasps coach Shaun Edwards praised the performance of Josh Lewsey against Leeds Tykes, before hinting that a lack of harmony in the England camp was the reason for the full back's temporary dip in form.

Lewsey was inspirational in Wasps' 28-0 win over bottom club Leeds, who look doomed for relegation, and Edwards was quick to question (England assistant coach) Phil Larder's part in the recent axing of the British and Irish Lion.

"Josh Lewsey was outstanding. It showed a great attitude," said Edwards.

"It's no secret the players have to defend differently when they go with England.

"Josh was dropped for the last match and I believe the defence coach had something to do with that."

Commenting on the game, director of rugby Ian McGeechan revealed his satisfaction with the Wasps defence, who registered their first shut-out of the season.

"There's a lot to play for and I think it will go down to the wire. I don't expect anything will be resolved until the last match," said the Scot.

"The control we had for the whole match today was pleasing and the defence was outstanding."

Leeds director or rugby Phil Davies put on a brave face after a defeat that saw the Tykes slip 12 points adrift at the bottom, but his words carry an increasing element of desperation as the season draws to a close.

"The effort was phenomenal and that's what we have to hold on to over the last four games," said the Welshman.

"We have to try to win all the games and see where that takes us."
