Volley named as Quins skipper
Harlequins have announced that Paul Volley is to become their new captain.
Newly-promoted Harlequins have announced that recent signing Paul Volley is to become their new captain.
The 34-year-old, who only joined the National League One champions from French side Castres earlier in the summer, is to replace Andre Vos, who has relinquished the captaincy after three years.
Explaining the appointment, 'Quins director of rugby Dean Richards cited the former Wasps player's experience and leadership skills as being the clinching factors.
"Some may find it strange to select a player who has only recently joined the squad to take over as captain," he said.
"But Paul has captained sides before in his career and has tremendous experience, particularly of the club game in England.
"I have no doubt that he'll lead by example both on and off the pitch, and be an inspiration to others within the team."
Volley himself added: "My short-term objectives are to earn the respect of my team-mates and the Quins supporters, while over the next two years I am confident the squad can achieve the goals we have set for ourselves - to qualify for the Heineken Cup and to reach a number of cup finals."
Despite stepping back from the helm, South African loose forward Vos is to remain on the playing staff at the Twickenham Stoop for another season.
And Richards paid tribute to Vos, who remained loyal to the club despite their unprecedented relegation from the Premiership in 2005.
"He's been a tremendous servant to the club and we're delighted that he's decided to stay one for another season but he felt the time was right for a change of leadership."
Meanwhile, Leeds have signed Argentina lock Pablo Bouza from Quins.
The 33-year-old only featured five times in Harlequins' promotion season last year.
