Saints veterans sign on
Northampton's experienced duo Tom Smith and Matt Lord have signed new contracts.
Northampton Saints have handed experienced duo Tom Smith and Matt Lord new contracts at Franklins Gardens. Both Lord (pictured) and Smith have made over 100 appearances for Northampton and club officials have rewarded their continuing fine displays with new contracts.
Scotland and Lions prop Smith has been at the club for five years and racked up 120 appearances in becoming a cornerstone of the Saints' pack.
Capped 61 times, Smith has now signed on at Northampton until the end of next season, and is delighted to have extended his association with the club.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Northampton Saints and I am pleased to have signed for another year," Smith told the club's website.
"This is a great traditional club and I am truly committed to its future."
Head coach Paul Grayson said Smith was playing as well as ever and is still showing great fitness despite his advancing years.
"Tom is an inspiration. He is as fit as ever and is playing some of his very best rugby," said Grayson.
"As an example to younger players of the advantages of hard work and desire never to be beaten, Tom is up there with the best and I am delighted he is extending his contract."
Another experienced Saints player to extend his stay is lock Matt Lord, who has figured 105 times for Northampton since joining from Leeds Tykes.
Lord was Player of the Year last season for both supporters and players and has now signed a two-year extension to his contract.
"Lordy is a crowd favourite because he wears his heart on his sleeve," Grayson added.
"His work rate is obvious and what he might lack in stature, he makes up for in enthusiasm."
Lord says that he has made Northampton his home and hopes to be involved for a lot longer after signing his new deal.
"Franklin's Gardens and Northampton are home away from home for me and my family," said Lord.
"I was really honoured to make my 100th appearance earlier this season, especially at a home game, and hope to be involved as many games as I can during the next two-and-a-half years."
