Lewsey: Make your minds up
Josh Lewsey wants England's management to decide what his best position is.
Josh Lewsey has hit out at the England management, demanding they make up their minds on what his best position is.
Lewsey has featured at full-back, centre and wing throughout his 42-cap England career, and he is increasingly being used to plug problem positions.
The Wasps man produced a man-of-the-match display from full-back in last week's 23-21 victory over South Africa, including two fantastic try-saving tackles.
Lewsey will not state where he prefers to play his rugby, but after retaining his 15 jersey for Saturday's return clash with the Springboks, he is hoping consistency in results inspires consistency in selection.
"I've been shifted around all over the shop. I just want to settle in one spot," said the 30-year-old, who played on the wing during the 2003 World Cup triumph.
"If the goalposts change every week it's very difficult to set your objectives and goals. You won't get the best out of me. But I accept you have to work within the coaches' framework."
Lewsey will start in an unchanged back three against the Boks at Twickenham, as coach Andy Robinson looks to build some confidence going into the Six Nations.
Having snatched victory from the jaws of defeat last week, England fans will look for a performance to match the result this time around, but Lewsey insists results are everything right now.
"We want to play this brilliant, aesthetically-pleasing rugby but sometimes you just have to grind out a victory. We didn't care how we won it, it was just about winning the game.
"The 2003 team was mentally tough but that came out of many disappointments such as losing a World Cup quarter-final.
"We're having our disappointments but it's all about getting the best out of the team on the field as consistently as possible. Guys like Phil Vickery are key.
"Last week was a hard-fought win. South Africa are a very difficult team to play against. We didn't care how we won it."
