Van Niekerk considering court action against Northampton
South African forward Joe van Niekerk is weighing up taking legal action against Northampton after his contract at the Saints was cancelled.
Van Niekerk, who agreed to joined the National One outfit in the summer, saw his move to Franklin's Gardens collapse after the club deemed his lower back injury too serious.
However, having undergone a medical at the Golden Lions with a view to joining the Super 14s club, the flanker could now take Northampton to court.
Van Niekerk's mother and agent Cathy said: "Joe still wants to play abroad. We'll have to fight a legal battle."
Van Niekerk is to begin training with the Lions, with the club's president Jannie Ferreira impressed by the 27-year-old's positive attitude during their discussions.
He said: "At his best, Joe is a very good player, his presence will add depth to the Lions' loose forwards because nobody can play in 14 consecutive matches in this competition."
