Assistant coach resigns after three years in the job

Aussie McLean has resigned as Hurricanes assistant coach with immediate effect. McLean spent the last three years as Colin Cooper's right-hand man and cites the need for a new challenge as the main reason behind his decision. "I've had a lot of experience as a head coach and when you've had three years as an assistant, you start to feel that it's time to look for new opportunities," he said. "To make a comparison with the Crusaders, Robbie Deans had four different assistants during his time in charge and it will be good for Colin Cooper to bring in some new ideas next year."

Tribute

Whilst disappointed to be losing McLean, Hurricanes chairman Paul Collins was quick to thank him for his services. "On behalf of the board of directors, I would like to thank Aussie for the contribution he has made to the Hurricanes franchise during the last three years," said Collins. "During that time he has played a major role in helping us reach our first ever final in 2006 and securing a semi-final appearance in 2008. We will always be very grateful for that and wish him well for the future." McLean's next job could be overseas, a concern voiced by Neil Sorenson, New Zealand Rugby Union's general manager of professional rugby. "Aussie is regarded as one of New Zealand rugby's top rugby coaches and we respect his decision to step down as Hurricanes assistant coach," he said. "He has extensive experience at all levels of the game, from age grades to Super 14 and we are very keen to still have Aussie involved in New Zealand rugby."
