Canterbury have finally agreed to the release of Sonny Bill Williams after negotiating a financial settlement.
The New Zealand international rugby league star was under a five-year contract with the Bulldogs but will now take up a two-year deal with French union side Toulon.
The settlement, in which the Bulldogs received around £350,000 in compensation, includes the stipulation that Williams cannot play for another NRL team until the end of 2012 - although the player says he will never return to rugby league.
"We remain bitterly disappointed at the manner in which Sonny Bill deserted his team-mates and his supporters," Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg said in a statement on the club's website.
"We have, however, reached the point where we need to get on with business and we have withdrawn the injunction against him playing for any other club."
