Referee forced to call off contest with playing surface unsafe

The Guinness Premiership clash between Harlequins and Worcester has been postponed due to a frozen pitch at The Stoop. Referee Wayne Barnes took the decision to call off Saturday's fixture after holding a 4.30pm pitch inspection on Friday afternoon. The official deemed the playing surface unsafe despite the best efforts of the home team to make sure the game could go ahead. Quins drafted in hot air blowers and laid down double covers in the hope of beating the freezing conditions in the capital. A new date has not yet been announced but the hosts have told supporters that any match tickets will be valid for the rearranged fixture. The postponement means Worcester are yet to play in 2009 after they were also frozen off against Sale at their Sixways home last week.
