Bulls prop doubtful for season opener

Bulls prop Rayno Gerber is doubtful for the opening Super 14 match against the Reds after suffering a groin injury against the Lions on Saturday. Bulls team doctor Org Strauss confirmed that Gerber has a small tear in his groin and it will take two to three weeks to make a full recovery. Gerber had been set to play in the friendly against the Cheetahs in Polokwane on Friday - however young Frik Kirsten is likely to come in as a replacement. Bulls coach Frans Ludeke told the Pretoria News: "It is a bit of a big blow for us because I would have wanted to use him for our next game against the Cheetahs. Rayno could miss out on the first game of the Super 14 but that is the worst case scenario at the moment. "Fortunately it is not long term but at the same time this is putting our depth to the test and allowing us to give a guy like Frik Kirsten the opportunity to show what he can do at this level." The Bulls also have fitness concerns over the versatile Pedrie Wannenburg, who has been sidelined due to a knee injury. However Jaco Pretorius is making good progress after a back injury and he could now play against the Cheetahs.
