Wales completed a day of shocks at the Rugby Sevens World Cup in Dubai with a 19-12 win over Argentina in the final.
England, New Zealand, South Africa and Fiji all knocked out early
Wales completed a day of shocks at the Rugby Sevens World Cup by claiming the Melrose Trophy thanks to a 19-12 win over Argentina.
Aled Thomas stole down the blindside to grab the decisive try after the Welsh had led 12-7 at half time thanks to scores from Richie Pugh and Tal Selley.
Having never been beyond the sem-finals stages of any tournament, the result was the final upset on a day of stunning results in Dubai.
Wales - who had previously lost to Argentina in the pool stages - had already managed to knock out Sevens heavyweights New Zealand and Samoa.
Shocks
They toppled the All Blacks 15-14 to reach the last four before setting up an unlikely rematch against the Pumas in the final by seeing off Samoa 19-12.
England crashed out at the quarter-final stage, losing a sudden death match against Samoa 31-26, Simaika Mikaele the extra time hero for the South Sea Islanders when he jinked to cross under the posts.
Samoa thought they had won it in regulation time through Alafoti Faosiliva but a last-gasp try from Fiji-born Josh Drauniniu took it to extra time.
England coach Ben Ryan admitted the defeat had been "a pretty bitter pill to swallow. It is certainly the most disappointing moment to date.
Hugely disappointed
"I am hugely disappointed for the players because this was a World Cup-winning side that we had got together and they showed that last night and they showed it up until extra time when we came roaring back into it, when we just made a couple of the wrong decisions.
"But we didn't hold on to the ball. Extra time is all about holding on to the ball and making sure that we create an opportunity and don't force things - there is no need to."
Kenya were surprise winners over defending champions Fiji in the quarter-finals, winning 26-7 to set up a semi-final clash with Argentina, for whom Martin Bustos Moyano crossed twice in their 14-12 win over South Africa.
Fiji looked flat-footed and Kenya's physicality in the contact area unsettled their opponents who made an uncharacteristically high number of handling errors.
