England bounce back from defeat to win Plate competition
Defending champions South Africa beat Kenya to clinch the Adelaide Sevens crown, while England beat hosts Australia to win the Plate competition.
The South Africans have extended their lead in the IRB Sevens World Series as a result of their triumph - now leading second-placed England by 28 points.
Having beaten New Zealand in the quarters and Fiji in the semi-final, South Africa had just too much for Kenya outscoring their opponents by four tries to one to run out 26-7 winners.
They made the perfect start as Robert Ebersohn opened the scoring with just 25 seconds on the clock, and although Kenya - playing in their first Sevens World Series final - fought back bravely, Vuyo Zangqa, Ryno Benjamin and Renfred Dazel all touched down to confirm the victory.
England bounced back from a humiliating 40-0 rout by Fiji in the quarter-finals to ensure they took some success from their trip down under.
Ben Ryan's team defeated New Zealand (21-14) and then edged a thrilling encounter with Australia to claim the Plate crown.
Tries from Moseley's James Rodwell, Exeter's Chris Cracknell and a superb solo effort from Saracens' Dan Caprice sealed the semi-final success against New Zealand, while the encounter with Australia went to extra-time.
Gollings the hero
Leicester's Tom Varndell, Rodwell, and Newcastle's Ollie Phillips all touched down as the contest ended 19-19, and it was Ben Gollings - who plays in Australia for Gold Coast - who stepped up to win it in extra-time.
Ryan stated afterwards: "I was very pleased with the way the players came back to win the Plate final.
"We are second place in the series and we're looking forward to playing in front of our own fans next month at Twickenham."
