Saxons stroll into Churchill Cup final after 13th win on the spin
England Saxons continued their fine run of form as they booked their place in the Churchill Cup final with a 56-17 destruction of the United States at Glendale.
Stuart Lancaster's side stormed to a 13th win in a row despite conceding the game's first try, but then never looked like losing the game after that.
The Saxons crossed the line for seven tries, scored by Nick Kennedy, Micky Young, Rob Webber, Tom Guest, Tom Varndell, Brent Barritt and Noah Cato.
After debutant Stephen Myler had kicked a fifth-minute penalty, the Eagles hit back almost immediately when scrum-half Mike Petri went over for a try that was converted by Mike Hercus.
However, Kennedy took advantage of shoddy American defending soon after to put the Saxons back in front - and they went from strength to strength.
Myler kicks
Although the extras were not taken, Myler pulling his kick across goal, the same player got it right with a 16th-minute penalty, extending England's lead to 11-7.
The hosts lost Roland Suniola to the sin-bin in the 18th minute following a high tackle on Dominic Waldouck - and Myler converted to make it 14-7.
Former Dragons and Leeds fly-half Hercus reduced the deficit to four points when he kicked a 22nd-minute penalty but six minutes later Young crossed and Myler again converted.
Three minutes before the break, Webber used his strength to capitalise on good work by Peter Short and Barritt - Myler again converting to make it 28-10.
The bonus point was secured six minutes into the second half from Guest, after Woods had intercepted and found him. Myler added the extras.
Fifth try
Four minutes later Varndell scored England's fifth try after neat handling from Nick Abendanon and Waldouck had cut the hosts apart - Myler's conversion made it 40-10.
The kicker was on the mark again eight minutes later after Barritt had crossed the line - although it looked like Waldouck's pass that sent the Saracens centre clear was forward.
Lancaster used the position of strength to give his replacements a run - including Danny Cipriani - before the Eagles had a rare moment of cheer in the 67th minute.
Chris Biller's strength enabled him to capitalise on good work by Tom Clever to score a try that enabled Hercus to maintain his 100% record with the boot and reduce the deficit to 49-17.
However, the Saxons had the last word when Cato crossed in 74th minute, using his explosive pace to score under the posts. Myler again converted.
