Back rower out for up to eight weeks with injuries

Ospreys back rower Tom Smith has been sidelined for up to eight weeks with hip and knee injuries. The 24-year-old sustained the damage during the Welsh region's 19-17 Magners League victory over Connacht on February 21. Smith was forced off early during the Liberty Stadium clash, and scans have since shown the extent of the injuries. "Tom has torn muscles in his hip, as well as damaging knee ligaments," said Ospreys physio Chris Towers. "He is improving as well as we could hope for at the moment, but we are looking at a recovery period of around six to eight weeks from the day of the game, which means that we are looking at a mid-April return to playing." The lay-off could see Smith ruled out of Ospreys' Heineken Cup quarter-final clash against Biarritz in France on April 10.
