Scotland lock Jim Hamilton has announced his retirement from international rugby after he was left out of Vern Cotter's squad for the upcoming World Cup.

The 32-year-old Saracens forward made his final appearance for Scotland in the 16-12 win over Italy in Turin last month, winning his 63rd cap having made his debut under Frank Hadden in 2006.

He was the 1000th player to win Scotland honours when he made his bow against Romania nine years ago and he went to make appearances at both the 2007 and 2011 World Cups.

He told social media: "I have loved every single moment of wearing the thistle and feel extremely humble to have done it for nine years. Thank you to the Scotland supporters for making it so special.

"Scottish rugby has not only given me an opportunity to play rugby at the highest level but has given me a platform to be a better man. I wish everyone involved with Scottish rugby all the best and I know consistent success is around the corner."
