A French labour court has ordered the country's rugby federation to pay more than 1m euros in compensation to former France coach Guy Noves.

Noves filed a lawsuit after the federation fired him in December 2017 with two years left on his contract. He was replaced by Jacques Brunel.

The Prud'hommes council in Toulouse ruled that Noves was entitled to 1,008,000 euros (£870,000), including 720,000 euros (£621,000) in damages for unjustified termination.

Although Noves was France's most successful club coach, leading Toulouse to four European Cup and 10 French league titles, he was unable to reproduce that form for his country. Overall, he won only seven of 21 matches, drawing one and losing 13.

According to French media, Noves had asked for nearly 3m euros (£2.59m) in compensation but said he would not appeal the decision.
