Italy coach Jacques Brunel has called up Benetton Treviso centre Enrico Bacchin to replace injured team-mate Luca Morisi for the World Cup.
Bacchin has played three times for Italy and made his debut in the 22-19 victory over Scotland at Murrayfield last February.
The 22-year-old was part of Italy's pre-World Cup training camp but was dropped before the final 31-man squad was announced.
Morisi was diagnosed on Wednesday with a torn ligament in his right knee, sustained in Saturday's 23-19 defeat to Wales in Cardiff in Italy's final warm-up game.
Bacchin will link back up with the squad on Saturday before they travel to England on Sunday.
The Azzurri take on France in their opening World Cup match on September 19 at Twickenham and they also face Canada, Ireland and Romania in Pool D.
