All Blacks' Ian Foster dismisses Warren Gatland media comments

New Zealand's Ian Foster has dismissed Warren Gatland's complaints about the press as a book-selling tactic.

The Wales head coach criticised the New Zealand press of unfair treatment, particularly during the British and Irish Lions tour in his home country.

But Foster batted Gatland's comments away and said: "Gatty is well capable of promoting his own book."

Foster also played down comments made by Scotland assistant coach Dan McFarland, who described All Blacks captain Kieran Read as "cynical" after the Kiwi's 17-22 victory at Murrayfield.

However, the assistant coach did acknowledge Read's history means he has sometimes overstepped the mark.

"No I don't think so at all [whether he is on the right side of the line], I think his record tells you that," said Foster.

"But I think if the comment was about highlighting a spell where we were put under a lot of pressure and were penalised a lot, then we have to learn from that.

"We were put under a lot of pressure and the ref found that we infringed a lot more than we would have liked to, so we need to take that lesson on board.

"But to extrapolate that few minutes out to say 'cynical', I wouldn't agree with that."

Wales have a number of absentees ahead of the test, with star man Liam Williams ruled out with an abdominal injury as well as Jonathan Davies and winger Alex Cuthbert.

But Foster is still expecting a physical game against Wales, despite going into Saturday knowing a victory would mean their 30th straight victory over their hosts.

"We can only go on what you guys are saying about what is coming out of their camp and what we've seen the last two games," said Foster.

"There's been some changes and we've discussed that, but at the end of the day some things don't change. It's going to be a very physical rugby game, we know that, and we know it's about the collision area when you play Wales.

"It's about the physicality and several other things that have to stay high on our list."
