South African fly-half has day to forget

Bath boss Steve Meehan declined to point the finger at Butch James after his side's 21-17 home defeat to Gloucester. The South African fly-half missed four penalties and a conversion, and was also at fault for Willie Walker's 71st-minute try after having his clearance charged down. James' performance stood in stark contrast to his 18-point haul during the opening victory over Bristol. "I have never blamed a kicker for a defeat, and I won't start today," said Meehan. Bath captain Michael Lipman added: "Butch is a world-class number 10. Sometimes you have an off-day with the boot, and that is what happened. "He is a tremendous talent, but even the best don't have their day every day." Bath outscored Gloucester on tries, and the 21-17 reversal was their first home loss against the Cherry-and-Whites in 20 years of English league rugby. "Our game wasn't what it should have been, and that is disappointing," added Meehan. "There will be a few home truths told on Monday - we will get back in and work really hard.

Execution

"Our execution wasn't what it needed to be. We knocked the ball on, and when you get slow ball against a spoiling team it puts you under the pump." Gloucester head coach Dean Ryan admitted the result was all that mattered. Ryan made six changes to the starting XV that lost to Leicester last Sunday - only one enforced by injury - and felt his selection decisions were vindicated. "In terms of results, that means everything to us," said Ryan. "We've come here in the past and been the better side, but then gone away with nothing. "Last week was the first game of the season, but we clearly hadn't learnt lessons - so I wasn't going to hang around for five or six games. "Previously, I would probably have said to learn from things. But you get to a point where you have to draw a line in the sand."
