Edinburgh boss Robinson left fuming by performance of referee

Wasps director of rugby Ian McGeechan praised Danny Cipriani's kicking display following the hard-fought 25-16 win over Edinburgh. The fly-half bounced back from his disappointing autumn with England - including being dropped for the New Zealand game - by booting 20 points for his club side. Tom Rees scored the visitors only try at at Murrayfield as Wasps' returning internationals played a crucial role in the Heineken Cup victory. "His kicking today was very good," said McGeechan of Cipriani. "He probably knows his own kicking game hasn't been top notch. "Credit to all the England boys, they've had a six-day turnaround. "When you've played four tough weeks internationally, it was a big ask of them and they've been excellent."

Not pretty

McGeechan admitted he set his side up to win at all costs having been well beaten in their previous European outing in Leinster. "You're never sure with the referees what you're going to do with the ball," said the Lions coach. "Rightly or wrongly, it's safer to try to play the game in your opponents' half. "It's not pretty, it's nowhere near the quality of rugby that was being played last year, but there was a lot at stake today. "We've just got to keep winning. We couldn't afford to lose tonight." Edinburgh head coach Andy Robinson was not impressed by the performance of referee Christophe Berdos. "I'm annoyed," said the former England boss. "I've just had a chat with Mike Blair now and he said, 'The referee was praising me for what I was doing in the scrum at the put-in and was having a go at the Wasps players - and suddenly he's free-kicked us'. That was frustrating. "He's made the call on the sin-binning of Ross Rennie for the dump tackle. In his opinion, it was a dangerous tackle." The hosts at one stage trailed 12-0 but roared back to go 16-15 ahead, winger Mark Robertson scoring a try which was converted by Chris Paterson, who also knocked over three penalties.
Smart
"Tactically, we were smart in the way we played," Robinson added. "I thought the forward pack were in total control of the Wasps forward pack and we played in the right areas. "We've made a couple of disappointing decisions and every time we got isolated inside our half, Wasps won the ball and they punished us. "The closest they got to our line with the ball in hand was our 22-metre line and they got 12 points in the lead. "Unfortunately, at this level, that's how you win games. When it came to closing the game down the last 15 minutes, Wasps showed the class they had in order to do that."
