Meehan annoyed at leaky Bath

Glasgow lose again despite scoring five tries on their travels

Bath boss Steve Meehan blasted his players for being lazy in defence following their thrilling 35-31 victory over Glasgow. The two teams served up a Heineken Cup classic at The Rec, the hosts eventually running out winners to remain in contention in Pool Five. Wing Michael Stephenson bagged a brace of tries while flanker Andy Beattie and substitute centre Shaun Berne also scored to clinch a bonus point. However, Bath, who could not afford to lose following Toulouse's triumph over the Dragons on Saturday, conceded five tries - much to the annoyance of their coach.

Disappointed

"I am very disappointed with our defensive application," Meehan said. "Defence is a reflection of motivation and attitude, and we need to do some work on that. "Glasgow are currently second in the Magners League, they have a terrific spirit and great drive, and we have to make sure our attitude is spot-on when we go up there next Sunday. "At 35-19 ahead, we had the game under control, but it goes until the final bell, which is a question for the players individually and collectively. "Holes opened up in our defence because guys were lazy." Having won on home soil Bath will hope to complete a European double over Glasgow when the two sides meet again next weekend at Firhill. "If we are going to go through, then we need to win in Glasgow next weekend," added Meehan. "We need to continue nipping at Toulouse's heels." Glasgow look almost certain to miss out on the quarter-finals having suffered a third successive defeat in this year's competition. Winger Thom Evans scored three tries for the visitors, who also crossed through replacement Hefin O'Hare and young fly-half Ruaridh Jackson. They could well have clinched a stunning victory at the death but Jackson, standing in for Dan Parks, was unable to score his second interception try, his grubber kick rolling out of play to bring an end to a pulsating encounter.
Expectional bunch
"We are very frustrated," Glasgow coach Sean Lineen admitted. "The guys had a lot of belief coming down here. They are an exceptional bunch of players, and they want to win. "Losing against Newport Gwent Dragons in our opening game was the killer for us. We were 10-0 up in that game, then their forwards came back and dominated the contest. "It would have been fantastic to get a result here, but ultimately we need to tighten our defence and we've got to learn when to play - and when not to play. "We came up short, but the players are hurting. We deserved to maybe get a bit more."
