Redpath: Winning is everything

Gloucester boss also confirms Qera condition

Gloucester head coach Bryan Redpath insisted "it doesn't matter whether you win well or win ugly," after his side's 25-13 Guinness Premiership victory over Newcastle. As well as his after match thoughts, Redpath also delivered an encouraging fitness update on flanker Akapusi Qera who was knocked out and carried off during the win. The Fiji international required seven minutes of on-pitch treatment from paramedics at Kingsholm following a collision with Newcastle number eight Filipo Levi. "He was knocked out," said Redpath.

Rallied

"He took a while to wake up, and he has gone to hospital because of the knock he took to his head, but he is talking. He seems fine." Despite Qera's second-half exit, the Cherry and Whites rallied to claim their fourth Premiership win this season. Wales international fly-half Nicky Robinson played his part by kicking 20 points from five penalties, a drop-goal and conversion of wing Charlie Sharples' early try. Newcastle showed attacking glimpses during the first-half, but they made the long journey home with just two Jimmy Gopperth penalties to show for their efforts until Alex Tait touched down for a converted score in injury time. "We had to grind out a win in the right way in conditions that weren't great," added Redpath. "Winning is everything - it doesn't matter whether you win well or win ugly.
Messy
"I am delighted the boys stuck to it. There are no easy games in this league - anyone can beat anyone on their day. "We were put under pressure at times in defence, but it was a game we had to win going into two Heineken Cup matches against Glasgow during the next fortnight." The defeat was the Falcons' second on the bounce following three wins in a row - and rugby director Steve Bates could have few complaints after seeing his team finish second-best. Bates said: "We created two or three really good chances in the first-half, but we didn't take them. "The breakdown became more and more messy in the second-half, and we kept giving away penalties. That was the difference in the end. "It was a pretty even game on most fronts. We just gave them too many opportunities, and we didn't play very sensibly at the start of the second-half."
