Ospreys second row Rynier Bernardo has been ruled out for the rest of the season after being told he requires knee surgery.

Bernardo limped out of last month’s LV= Cup defeat to Gloucester after he was injured inside the opening five minutes at Kingsholm

Scans have now confirmed the South African dislocated his knee cap and the 23-year-old, who joined the Welsh side on a three-year contract in April, will now undergo surgery to reconstruct his damaged ligaments.

The Pro12 side’s medical performance manager, Chris Towers, told the club’s website. “We have discussed his treatment with the specialist and, essentially, the surgery means that he will miss the rest of the season.

“Post op, we will be in a better position to confirm the likely extent of his lay-off, once we have seen the full extent of his injury.”

Bernardo joins fellow locks Lloyd Peers and De Kock Steenkamp on the sidelines, while Alun Wyn Jones is also unavailable while on international duty with Wales.
