Newcastle Falcons sign Alex Rogers on full-time contract

Newcastle Falcons have signed loosehead prop Alex Rogers following his impressive performances last year when dual registered with Blaydon RFC.

The 28-year-old moved to the National League One side from French club Lille last season after registering to study at Northumbria University and he was invited to train alongside the Falcons.

Rogers featured 19 times for Newcastle last season, five of which were starts, and acquitted himself well in a pack that impressed with its power and technique to earn a full-time contract.

Eastbourne-born Rogers, a former England U18, U19 and U21 international, began his rugby career with Harlequins, where he was a member of the club's Academy system from the age of 13, and has also played in the Middle East with Abu Dhabi Harlequins and in Australia with Western Subiaco.

Newcastle boss Dean Richards said: "With Alex studying at university and playing locally last season, it gave us a chance to keep an eye on and try out a player I knew from Harlequins and I thought he did well for us when he played.

"Coming into the side on a full time basis, he will play a key part of our plans for the season ahead.”

Rogers said: "It's great to change the loan agreement into a permanent deal. I played a few games for Newcastle last year, certainly more than I expected and enjoyed the experience.

"I'm joining three quality looseheads so there is going to be a challenge to try and break into but it's one I am looking forward too.

"The direction the club is going means it's really exciting times to be involved.”
