Wales No 8 Taulupe Faletau does not need surgery on his injured ankle.
The Dragons star had to seek specialist advice after he limped off during the recent Guinness PRO12 victory over Zebre.
There had been fears he had suffered a recurrence of a previous serious injury, but he has been given the all-clear to resume training – a significant boost for Wales boss Warren Gatland with the Six Nations just over a month away.
Dragons forwards coach Kingsley Jones told Wales Online: “It seems he tweaked an ankle. The specialist he saw said it was nothing major and for ‘Toby’ to see how it goes.
“Sometimes there’s a rush for players to have surgery but it was decided to wait for it to settle down.
“Toby has trained. He’s done some running on it under the guidance of our medical staff and conditioning team.
“We haven’t ruled him out of the New Year’s Day derby with Cardiff Blues at Rodney Parade.”
