May will start England's first game of the 2017 tournament against France at Twickenham on Saturday, with Eddie Jones' side looking to extend their winning run to 15 matches.

The Gloucester flyer has been in and out of England's side, mainly because of injury, but scored tries against South Africa and Argentina during the autumn campaign when four more victories were secured.

But May says England's winning run, which included their Grand Slam success in last year's Six Nations, counts for little ahead of the start of this year's competition.

And pressure for places in Jones' squad, even factoring in a number of pre-tournament injuries, means performances have to remain at a high level as team-mates look to retain their jerseys.

May told Sky Sports News HQ: "I don't think me or the boys are in a position to be complacent because it is so competitive for places in the team.

"For sure when I go out to train I know I've got to train as well as I can because I want to be in the team and that's all I focus on. I just want to be in this team and be the best player in my position in the Six Nations.

"We've trained so hard last week and this week, focusing hard on being the best we can be, driving standards and putting ourselves under pressure.

"If we can get through that maybe the game will be the easier part in some ways."
