Eddie Jones says England must take Wales game 'by the horns'

England head coach Eddie Jones provides an injury update and explains why the win over France was not as bad after a second viewing

Eddie Jones has warned England they risk defeat if they start Saturday's Six Nations clash with Wales as slowly as they did against France.

France were the better team for 60 minutes at Twickenham, but England doggedly stayed in contention, and - after a big impact from some of the replacements - improved in the final 20 minutes to escape with a 19-16 victory.

Jones hinted that he will keep changes of personnel to a minimum for Cardiff, but the England head coach says the players' approach to the start of the game must be entirely different if they want to extend their extraordinary winning run past 15 games.

"Effort, and stat-wise in the last 20 minutes we were almost immaculate," he told Sky Sports News HQ. "But we've got another 60 minutes to fix.

"The more games you win, the more you think you are going to win. And sometimes that can mean that you don't take the game by the horns at the start.

"We really need to do that this week against Wales because if we allow Wales in the game and allow them some easy points, the crowd comes into it, the crowd affects the referee and we're in a real bun-fight - and we don't want to be in a bun-fight."

James Haskell, Danny Care, Jack Nowell and match-winning try-scorer Ben Te'o had a significant impact off the bench, but Jones says that does not necessarily mean any of them will start at the Principality Stadium.

"It was our first game of the tournament," he said. "We'll certainly look at the team and see where we can improve it. But generally speaking we'll be fairly consistent in terms of our selection."

Jones says he expects a pumped-up Welsh crowd in one of the great cathedrals of rugby.

"Once you go down the M4 and cross the River Severn you are in hostile territory," he said. "Wales are one of the greatest rugby countries in the world. So to go to their home ground in the middle of their city - it's a privilege and an honour. We're looking forward to playing down there."

Jones confirmed that none of the 23 that featured against France are doubts for the Wales match.

"We're bruised and battered - it was a tough old game," he said. "We've got a couple of guys going for check-ups today but we should have everyone available for selection."

All 10 games of the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand will be shown live on Sky Sports, starting June 3 2017.
