Dark Blues claim just second victory of past six years
Oxford took the honours in the 2010 Varsity rugby match as they beat old rivals Cambridge 21-10 at Twickenham on Thursday.
The Dark Blues emerged victorious for just the second time in the last six years courtesy of first-half tries from Alex Cheeseman and James Crozier.
Cambridge launched a fightback in the second period and got within five points after the award of a penalty try, but the boot of Charlie Marr (11 points) ensured Oxford remained out of reach.
After a cagey opening, it was Marr who opened the scoring on 20 minutes as Cambridge were penalised for sacking the maul.
Oxford's first try arrived moments later following an excellent passage of offloading from both forwards and backs down the shortside.
The move culminated with a clever flicked pass from Sean Morris to Marr who released Cheeseman to finish powerfully, Marr adding the conversion.
The lead was extended to 15-0 on 26 minutes as the Oxford backs again combined well, this time it was Morris offloading to James Crozier out wide allowing the full back a clear run to line.
Cambridge did manage to respond before the break, full-back and captain James Richards landing a close-range penalty after Oxford had been penalised when desperately defending their line.
The Light Blues carried that momentum into the second period and, having seen a Rob Stevens try chalked off for a forward pass, got themselves back into the contest on 56 minutes.
Having dominated the scrum throughout, their greater power paid off when Oxford were penalised for wheeling the scrum on their own try-line by the award of a penalty try which Richards coverted.
But Marr crucially kicked his second penalty of the afternoon just three minutes later to give Oxford breathing space again at 18-10 and the teenage fly-half calmed any late nerves with another successful penalty in the final minute.
