Quins coach "delighted" after beating Leicester

Harlequins coach Conor O'Shea declared his side "delighted" after defeating Leicester 34-25 in their LV= Cup opener at Welford Road. In difficult conditions, the visitors scored three excellent tries in the process of clinching their first win at the venue for 13 years. Nick Evans pulled the string from fly-half as well as kicking 19 points while Tomas Vallejos, Tom Guest and Gonzalo Camacho all crossed the try-line. "We are delighted. This competition is important to us and we've got off to a great start," O'Shea said after the match. "The two teams played some great counter-attacking rugby running from deep in the conditions, with Gonzalo Camacho particularly impressive."

Rest

Quins and Leicester will face each other again, this time in the Aviva Premiership, in two weeks' time and O'Shea is planning to rest some key players next weekend ahead of the clash. He added: "I'm happy with this result because they still had eight internationals on the field to our five. "I will be resting certain players for next Sunday's match against Newcastle because it will be a massive task when we come up here (in two weeks)." Leicester boss Richard Cockerill said that he had no excuses for the result despite fielding an under-strength side and hinted that certain players may have harmed their chances of a future place in the side. "I have no complaints. I thought the side I selected was good enough to win tonight," he said.
No regrets
"I have no regrets but I learnt a lot about certain people tonight. Some boys put their hands up for future selection but some guys let themselves down. "They took their chances. We coughed up too much ball in our own half and they played the conditions better with experience at 10 (Evans, who scored 19 points)." Leicester host Australia on Tuesday and Cockerill says he will be naming as strong a side as possible for the contest. He added: "I will be selecting the strongest available side on Tuesday. I won't have the Argentinians and Italians available but Billy Twelvetrees will be in. "He was impressive tonight and we took him off to protect him for Tuesday." The centre was brought off 20 minutes from the end after kicking six excellent goals.
