Livewire scrum-half signs 12-month deal at Sale

Sale Sharks have swooped to snap up South African scrum-half Scott Mathie from Leeds. The 28-year-old had continually caught the eye for Carnegie despite the club's relegation from the Aviva Premiership. And Mathie's form, particularly in the latter weeks of the season, has now seen Sale activate the release clause in his contract. Mathie had a further 12 months to run on his deal at Headingley but with the club finishing bottom of the standings and preparing for life in the Championship - regardless of the outcome of the play-off between Worcester and the Cornish Pirates - Leeds have agreed to release him. Mathie, who previously played in his homeland for the Blue Bulls and the Sharks, has now signed an initial year-long deal. The livewire No.9 will now compete with Dwayne Peel and Will Cliff for a place in the first-team squad at Edgeley Park.
