Matt Toomua has returned to Australia to join up with new club Melbourne Rebels after he was granted an early release by Leicester Tigers.

The versatile Australia international was due to leave the Tigers after the culmination of their Premiership campaign on Saturday, but will no longer feature against Bath and instead turn his attention towards Super Rugby.

Leicester have assured their Premiership status for next season ahead of the final regular round of the campaign.

"Matt Toomua flew back to Australia on Sunday and has already trained with the Rebels as they continue their Super Rugby campaign," a Tigers club statement read.

Toomua could make his Rebels debut against the Bulls on Friday, with Quade Cooper a doubt after he sustained a head knock against the Reds at the weekend.

The 29-year-old joined Leicester in 2016 but missed most of his debut campaign because of a knee injury.
