Former Ireland scrum-half Peter Stringer could miss three months of Sale's Aviva Premiership campaign after tearing his biceps tendon.
The 38-year-old half-back suffered the injury in the Sharks 34-34 Premiership draw at Worcester last Saturday.
"He snapped his biceps tendon so he's going to be out for two to three months," Sale rugby director Steve Diamond told BBC Sport.
Stringer, who was capped 98 times by Ireland over an 11-year period, made 24 appearances for Sale last term after joining them from Bath.
Sale sit ninth in the fledgling Premiership table with one win from four matches of the new season.
