Wholesale changes at the Sharks after review

A root and branch review in the aftermath of last season's struggles led to wholesale changes at the Sharks. Former New Zealand international Mike Brewer was brought in as head coach, with Jason Robinson stepping down and Kingsley Jones having his role redefined. Brewer has wasted little time in making his own mark on the Sale squad, with 19 players in total leaving - with more expected to go. Dean Schofield and Richard Wigglesworth had already opted to leave the club, but Brewer has wielded the axe to make room for a number of new faces.

Big decisions

Samoa internationals Paul Williams and Mikaele Pesamino - the IRB Sevens Player of the Year - are the marquee signings, with England Under-20 fly-half Rob Miller moving from Newcastle. Karena Wihongi, Wame Lewaravu and Aston Croall will bolster the front row, however Brewer has gambled on a number of lesser-known names. Matty James, Kyle Tonetti, Mike Petri, Nic Rouse and Chris Brightwell have been handed their chance to shine in the Premiership, while Iain Thornley has switched codes from Wigan Warriors. Brewer is certainly not afraid of making the big decision and ruffling feathers, but he faces a tough fight to achieve his aim of a top-six finish. Skysports.com prediction: While Brewer might have lofty ambitions, it is hard to see the club matching them. The spine of the side is strong, with the likes of Andrew Sheridan, James Gaskell, Dwayne Peel, Charlie Hodgson and Mark Cueto - however they lack the strength in depth. The loss of Hodgson for the opening month is also a huge blow. A more realistic aim for the Sharks would be for the side to develop ahead of mounting a stronger challenge next season. 9th.
