Ireland winger Tommy Bowe will miss the Six Nations and may not play again this season after having surgery on his damaged knee ligaments.
The 31-year-old was stretchered off during Ireland's Rugby World Cup quarter-final defeat against Argentina and was diagnosed with posterior cruciate ligament and meniscus damage in his right knee.
Bowe had surgery on Monday and his province Ulster confirmed he will be out for 'at least six months' as a result.
He is one of three Ulster internationals facing extended spells on the sidelines, with Ireland team-mates Iain Henderson and Jared Payne also suffering injury setbacks.
Lock forward Henderson is to undergo surgery to stabilise a joint in his hand, an injury he also suffered against the Pumas earlier this month, and is will miss around six weeks.
And there is no timescale for the return of centre Payne, who was ruled out of the rest of the tournament after breaking his foot during Ireland's Pool D clash with France.
An update on Ulster's website read: "Jared's fractured foot was stabilised through successful surgery. Ulster Rugby is awaiting his first post-operative review, after which a prognosis will be known."
