Scarlets chief happy with some aspects of thrilling win
Scarlets director of rugby Nigel Davies unsurprisingly gave a mixed review of his side's performance after they defeated Perpignan 43-34.
The Welsh side scored a bonus-point win in their opening Heineken Cup Pool 5 clash but gave up five tries to their French opponents, while scoring just four of their own.
Perpignan's challenge was effectively over when the hosts roared into a 40-15 lead early in the second-half at Parc y Scarlets, but the Catalan side dominated the latter stages to clinch a losing bonus point.
"It had everything didn't it? I was pleased with aspects of our game but I was disappointed with others," reflected Davies.
"We should have closed that game out earlier than we managed to, we were inaccurate on occasions and we made some poor decisions and allowed Perpignan back into the game.
"With the ball I was pleased with how we played, without it we still have plenty to work on.
"That's how I summed it up to the players and it's probably a strong position to be in for our next fixture as we can be pleased with the result but critical of certain areas of the performance.
"There were some excellent tries and it will be great to watch them back. The players have to be comfortable in what we are doing to go out and express themselves.
"We are nowhere near being the finished article. We have come a long way in a short space of time and we are moving in the right direction but there is plenty of work to do."
Perpignan centre David Marty, who at times appeared thoroughly bemused by the helter-skelter nature of the contest, described the match as bizarre.
The France centre said: "They (Scarlets) played a brilliant game. They played really well and when they attacked they made things happen.
"It was a strange game, a typical French game. With some craziness they managed to win the game."
