Scarlets coach claims Terviso win one of best performances
Nigel Davies says Scarlets produced one of their best Heineken Cup performances as they earned a bonus-point win at Benetton Treviso.
A 38-15 success for Scarlets put them four points clear of Leicester Tigers in Pool Five of the Heineken Cup, despite the Welsh region being without experienced duo Stephen Jones and Matthew Rees for the trip to northern Italy.
Tries from Dominic Day, Dan Newton, Gareth Maule and a late effort from Jonny Fa'amatuainu gave them the victory, that Davies ranked as one of the best he had seen.
"This result is right up there as one of our best in this competition, some of our recognised names weren't playing but these young boys are stepping in and really taking their opportunities," said Davies.
"It was a massive win for us and the bonus point could be really important.
Points
"We know we can play rugby, we are averaging 30 points a game, what we have tried to do is focus on playing without the ball and there was a big improvement today.
"Even in the final attack we were fighting to keep them out, that summed up our spirit today.
"These boys are the stars of our resurgence who have pushed the more recognised players and have shown they are worthy of this shirt."
Davies was not getting carried away with the result but hoped it had put pressure on Leicester ahead of their game on Sunday.
"We have targeted qualification and we are still in the hunt for that," Davies added.
"I would like to think we have put a bit of pressure on Leicester and Perpignan and we are really looking forward to the Leicester game in January because we let ourselves down against them earlier in the season."
Treviso head coach Franco Smith said: "We are disappointed after pushing the Scarlets so close last week."
