PODCAST: Justin Marshall on the Lions and this week's Rugby Championship clashes
Friday 9 September 2016 14:46, UK
Former All Black Justin Marshall discusses the Lions tour, and previews this weekend's Rugby Championship clashes on Sky Sports.
Marshall, who was part of the All Blacks side that whitewashed Sir Clive Woodward's Lions in 2005, believes Warren Gatland is the right man to lead the 2017 tour, but warned the Wales boss against picking assistant coaches that are too close to home.
"I think Warren Gatland was the right choice once Eddie Jones said that it wasn't something he wanted to take on," Marshall told James Gemmell.
"The fact that he has to probably consider, is how he balances it out. If he takes his entire Welsh setup, I think that's dangerous because it becomes too many voices that are singing off the same hymn sheet.
"They need different voices with different ideas to really map their tour out."
The former scrum-half also spoke to Gemmell about this weekend's Rugby Championship fixtures, saying the Wallabies are a team in 'crisis' as they prepare to face the Springboks in Brisbane.
"Their Super Rugby form was awful, it really was," said the 43-year-old. "And the recent performances have shown that not a great deal of change from Super Rugby form has gone into the international game.
"Australian rugby really is in a crisis position at the moment. They desperately need the win. Whether they can achieve that or not, I'm not sure.
"They've got huge injury problems, they've got problems within their game-plan, and they're going to face a South African side equally as desperate."
