The stars of 1991

The stars of the 1991 Rugby World Cup.

David Campese

The Australia winger goose-stepped his way to glory in 1991, with Campese scoring six tries and being named as the man of the tournament. His try against the All Blacks in the semi-final helped guide the Wallabies into the final, with Australia going on to overcome England in the showpiece event at Twickenham.

Ralph Keyes

Keyes remains a rugby enigma. Having been called into the squad for the tournament, Keyes went onto top the points scoring charts as Ireland came agonisingly close to reaching the semi-finals. Keyes, though, would play just three more times for his country.

Mick Skinner

'The Munch' made just four appearances in the 1991 tournament, but one moment alone will live long in the memory. With the quarter-final against France in Paris delicately poised at 10-10, Les Bleus had a scrum 5m out and looked set to score as Marc Cecillon picked up the ball and headed to the line. Skinner, though, now only hit Cecillon hard, but he picked up the France No.8 and drove him back, allowing England to turn over possession.

Michael Lynagh

The fly-half played a pivotal role in Australia's success and not just with the boot. Lynagh broke Irish hearts with his try in the dying minutes of their quarter-final, while he also scored against Wales in the group stages and helped set David Campese on his way for his tries.

Western Samoa

Clearly angered by their omission from the inaugural World Cup four years before, Western Samoa made up for lost time as they toppled Wales in Cardiff in one of the sport's biggest shocks. The Samoans went on to reach the quarter-finals, impressing fans with their hard hits and running rugby.
