Simon Raiwalui has left Saracens in order to play rugby in France
Saracens captain Simon Raiwalui has ended his four-year stay at Vicarage Road in order to spend the twilight years of his career in France.
The 32-year-old has made 112 appearances for Sarries, but he is keen to experience the French lifestyle before he retires.
"My wife and I have always loved France and I'm at the point in my career now where it feels right to make the move," explained the Fijian.
"I've always wanted to play in France and I've twice had opportunities to make the move in my career. I've got three children and it will be fantastic for them to experience a new way of life, go to school in a new country and learn a new language.
"It's not really a decision based on rugby. For us, this is very much about a lifestyle change and the chance to experience a new culture. We're really looking forward to it."
Improvements
Raiwalui leaves a Saracens team that is undoubtedly on the 'up', having reached the Premiership play-offs for the first time this season.
A 50-9 crushing at the hands of Gloucester ended the Fijian's dream of lifting the title, but he insists he expects to see further improvements in the near future.
"It's been a very good season for Saracens and there is great potential in this team to continue to develop and push for silverware," he added.
"Looking at the signings who are coming into the club next season, the team will only improve and I really wish everyone connected with the club all the best.
"I will certainly be keeping up to date with all the matches and watching as many of them as I can on television. The Saracens result will always be the first I will look for and I will be cheering on from afar."
Director of rugby Alan Gaffney has a ready-made replacement in All Blacks legend Chris Jack, who joins after the World Cup, but he paid tribute to Raiwalui's character.
"Simon's leadership qualities and performances have stood out both on and off the pitch this season. But this is a decision he has taken in the best interests of his family and I respect that.
"He and his family have a great opportunity to experience a different lifestyle and I, along with everyone at Saracens, wish them all the best with their new life."
