Munster pull off transfer coup by bagging All Black

Irish side Munster have pulled off a huge transfer coup by acquiring the services of New Zealand winger Doug Howlett from the start of next year. The All Black wing will move to Ireland on 1st January, subject to a medical and the approval of a work permit. Howlett will be with the All Blacks at the World Cup where he hopes to add the five more tries to his current tally of 43 in 59 Tests which will make him his country's all-time top try-scorer. The 28-year-old has agreed to a two-and-a-half year contract starting in January and says it is a huge opportunity for him to experience a new life. "This was a very big decision to make," Howlett told the Munster Web site. "I have had an amazing rugby career in New Zealand and I am grateful to every person who has worked with me and contributed to that. "I consider next year at Munster as a fantastic opportunity to play for another great club and experience a different lifestyle with my family."

Transfer coup

Munster chief Declan Kidney added that the province were delighted to have captured such a big-name signing. "We are delighted to sign someone of his calibre," said Kidney. "A lot of credit must go to Munster Rugby CEO Garrett Fitzgerald and outgoing Manager Jerry Holland for acquiring Doug's services in such a complex market. "There's a lot of rugby to be played in the next few months, however we are looking forward to welcoming Doug to the Munster fold on January 1st."
Henry tribute
All Blacks coach Graham Henry paid tribute to Howlett but admitted he was sad to see another star leave New Zealand. "Doug is a quality international player who has proven his ability at the highest level," Henry said. "He is a marvellous professional and excellent role model, and although it is disappointing to see a player of his class go overseas, we will always remember the outstanding contribution he has made to New Zealand rugby." Howlett joins the exodus of New Zealand players to Europe, with Byron Kelleher, Chris Jack, Rico Gear, Aaron Mauger, Carl Hayman and Luke McAlister all heading overseas after the World Cup.
