Skysports.com takes a look at Premiership new boys Northampton's chances of achieving more than survival this season.

Saints on the march as they return to the top flight

Guinness Premiership newcomers Northampton Saints have added 12 new faces to their ranks as they embark on a return to the top tier of domestic rugby. A flawless 2007-08 season saw Saints power to 30 wins in 30 league matches as they blew the rest of National One away to claim the title. And as well as Premiership rugby gracing Franklin's Gardens this season, there are also plenty of new names for the home supporters to familiarise themselves with. A quarter of the new recruits arrive at Northampton having agreed permanent deals from Premiership rivals Sale Sharks. Former Argentina international Ignacio Fernandez-Lobbe is one of the more high profile summer signings, and his non-nonsense approach and experience will be vital in the Saints pack.

Intent

Frustrated scrum-half Ben Foden has also departed from Edgeley Park in the hope of gaining some first-team action at No.9. Foden could be joined in the back-line by another former Shark, Chris Mayor after the former England U21 and Sevens international completed his move to Franklin's Gardens in the summer. Head coach Jim Mallinder has signalled his intent to keep Saints in the top flight with his host of summer signings, and Ireland 'A' duo Neil Best and Roger Wilson will also add to the quality of the squad following their move from Ulster. As well as the 12 recruits there have been 11 players to leave Northampton in the off-season. Of the 11 to depart from the club, only Mark Robinson (Wasps) and Robbie Kydd (Bath) have joined Guinness Premiership side's. Saints kick-off the 2008-09 campaign with a home fixture against Worcester and Mallinder's men will be keen to maintain the winning mentality first up.
