Danny Cipriani admitted he felt a "bit rusty" after coming through his comeback match against Bath unscathed.
The Wasps fly-half kicked three penalties and a conversion as he made his first appearance since suffering a bad ankle injury last season.
After four months out the England international was understandably unable to complete the game, Jeremy Staunton replacing him after 51 minutes.
Despite his return the defending champions were unable to come out on top, the 27-23 defeat being their fourth in five Guinness Premiership outings.
Disappointed
"I was very happy to get through the match but disappointed we lost," he said.
"Obviously I was a bit rusty at first; I made some mistakes which I know I can eradicate from my game after I've looked at the analysis.
"I thought my goal-kicking was good and I felt a bit more confident with my defence."
Wasps coach Shaun Edwards was delighted with Cipriani's efforts after such an extended lay-off.
However, he was not so happy with referee Sean Davey after the official ruled out a penalty before half time, despite the touch judges putting their flags up to confirm Cipriani had kicked the goal.
"He came through unscathed, got some tackles in, helped create a try for Riki Flutey and put some nice goal kicks over - even though one was disallowed," he said.
"It was incredibly difficult that we had that goal disallowed. We feel pretty aggrieved about what happened.
"I've never seen that happen before. I've seen it where one (touch-judge) has given it and the other one's not and the referee's adjudicated - but never both."
Terrific advertisement
Bath director of rugby Steve Meehan was full of praise for his team, particularly England prop Matt Stevens, after they went to the top of the table.
The prop created one try and scored another in the first half of a game that Meehan described as a "terrific advertisement for rugby".
"I thought it was Matt's best performance so far for the team," he said. "He played well last week against Worcester - and tonight was even better.
"We are absolutely delighted with that performance. It was a terrific game and a terrific advertisement for rugby.
"We went out to play and stuck to our game - and when we had to defend we defended well."
