South African comes off the bench to help new side to first home win

Luke Watson was delighted to make an immediate impact for Bath after a "chaotic" start to life in England. The South African back-row forward came off the bench to score a trademark close-range try in his new side's 21-11 LV= Cup win over Ospreys. The victory was Bath's first on home soil this season, albeit that it was recorded against a visiting side without 29 players due to injuries and international call-ups. Despite only recently arriving in the country, Watson - who slotted in at number eight - insisted he knew all about the rivalry with the Ospreys.

Tradition

"I've only been here a week and a half and it all's been a bit chaotic - a bit of a rush," he said. "I was aware of all the rivalry and tradition around today's game so I knew it was going to be a physical encounter. I really enjoyed it. "The main thing for me was to remember all the moves, try to fit into the structures, adapt as quickly as I could into the Bath strategy and fit into their style of play." Bath forwards coach Martin Haag admitted it was a relief to finally register a positive result in front of their own fans at The Rec. "Given the conditions, it was never going to be pretty," he said. "The performance in patches was really good. It may not have been the prettiest but sometimes when you need to win and you want some confidence, you just stick to the things you say you will do and come away with a win." Ospreys skipper Jerry Collins felt his team did themselves proud considering their depleted resources, stating: "We tried to play some rugby but we gave away too many penalties. We were in it right to the end though."
