Worcester coach pleased with improvement

Worcester head coach Mike Ruddock hailed the improvement in his side's discipline as they secured a crucial 13-0 victory over Newcastle. The Warriors sit third from bottom in the Guinness Premiership standings, and the win gives their chances of avoiding relegation a much-needed boost. Ruddock criticised the sloppiness displayed by his side in their defeat at Bath last weekend, but was in better spirits following their Sixways win. "Winning tonight was vital but there is still a long way to go," said Ruddock. "We know we have to maximise our home games but this is a win in the bank." Lock Will Bowley scored the all-important try seven minutes from time after earlier coming on as a replacement, and Ruddock added: "Will wants to play on the wing next week." Meanwhile, Newcastle coach Steve Bates admits his side gave away crucial opportunities to turn the game around.

Disappointed

"I'm disappointed we didn't get at least a bonus point from the game," said Bates. "If Jimmy had kicked the goal to make it 6-3, I'm sure the last 15 minutes would have been interesting. "As it was, we tried to force things in our own 22 and gave away that last try. "We didn't lack creativity though we needed better decision making. Some of our play was enterprising but I think we should have taken a couple of our penalty attempts as opposed to kicking for the corners." Newcastle were penalised heavily in the scrums, with Chris White giving a stern warning to prop Jon Golding. Bates added: "We shall have to look at the video and try assess the referee's interpretations as penalties in that area cost us dear."
