South Africa’s World Cup preparations were dealt a blow as captain Jean de Villiers was ruled out between four to six weeks with a fractured jaw following Saturday’s 37-25 defeat to Argentina.

De Villiers, who has 106 Tests starts for the Springboks, returned to the starting line-up for the first time since suffering a knee injury against Wales last November.

The 34-year-old is joined on the sidelines by flanker Marcell Coetzee who faces six weeks out with a medial collateral ligament injury.

Fullback Willie le Roux will undergo scans on his ankle after limping off early in the match at King’s Park.
