South Africa’s World Cup preparations were dealt a blow as captain Jean de Villiers was ruled out between four to six weeks with a fractured jaw following Saturday’s 37-25 defeat to Argentina.
De Villiers, who has 106 Tests starts for the Springboks, returned to the starting line-up for the first time since suffering a knee injury against Wales last November.
The 34-year-old is joined on the sidelines by flanker Marcell Coetzee who faces six weeks out with a medial collateral ligament injury.
Fullback Willie le Roux will undergo scans on his ankle after limping off early in the match at King’s Park.
However, lock Victor Matfield, scrumhalf Fourie du Preez and winger JP Pietersen will be assessed ahead of their final warm-up match against Argentina next Saturday, while Steven Kitshoff, Frans Malherbe, Willem Alberts, Warren Whiteley and Jan Serfontein have been declared fit to play.
