Bournemouth v Arsenal preview: Gunners look to get back to winning ways at the Vitality Stadium
Sunday 7 February 2016 12:12, UK
Arsenal travel to Bournemouth for their Super Sunday clash hoping to get their Premier League title bid back on track after a poor recent run of form.
Arsene Wenger's side head to the Vitality Stadium down in fourth place in the table having not won any of their last four league games, while they have also failed to score in their previous three matches.
The Gunners must arrest that alarming slump on the South Coast or face the possibility of falling eight points behind leaders Leicester City, who take on second-placed Manchester City at the Etihad 24 hours earlier.
However, the visitors will need to keep a close eye on Benik Afobe, with their former striker having scored in each of his last three league appearances for Bournemouth, including the winner at Crystal Palace on Tuesday.
Team news
Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe will make a late call on Junior Stanislas' availability after the winger suffered a knee injury two weeks ago.
Fellow forward Josh King came off the bench in the 2-1 midweek win at Selhurst Park and could be in line to start against Arsenal as he continues his return to full fitness following a hamstring problem.
Max Gradel and Callum Wilson remain on the long-term absentee list, but Howe says their comebacks are on schedule, meaning Gradel could be back in March and Wilson available for April.
Arsenal have no fresh injury concerns, with Tomas Rosicky (thigh) set to be out for up to three months, although Per Mertesacker will be hopeful of a recall having been on the bench for Tuesday's goalless draw with Southampton.
And Wenger believes Danny Welbeck could be back in three weeks after returning to training following a knee injury, while Santi Cazorla (knee) and Jack Wilshere (leg) are also missing.
Opta stats
Bournemouth have only played Arsenal twice before losing both games and failing to score in either (conceding five).
Arsenal have won just one of their last six Premier League away games (W1 D3 L2).
The Gunners haven't gone five Premier League games without a win since August 2011.
If Arsenal fail to score, it will be four Premier League matches without a goal for the first time since February 2009 and equal their longest run without a goal in the competition.
Arsenal have dropped seven points from winning positions away from home, more than any other team on the road.
Bournemouth have dropped more points from winning positions than any other team in the top flight (14).
Howe's side have scored a league-high tally (8) and proportion (28 per ecnt) of their goals in the opening 15 minutes of games this season.
Wilson is still Bournemouth's top scorer in the Premier League this season (5), yet hasn't played since the end of September.
Mesut Ozil is awaiting his first Premier League assist of 2016 despite creating 18 chances for his team-mates. Only Spurs' Christian Eriksen has created more in 2016 than the German (22).
Merson's prediction
Must, must, must, must, must-win game for Arsenal. They were Premier League favourites and now, all of a sudden, they're looking over their shoulder. This is a good game for Arsenal as they're not going to get kicked off the pitch by Bournemouth, but the Cherries have come into form of late. Afobe will be a handful and he'll be keen to impress against his former club. Because of that I fancy Bournemouth to get a point. Arsenal haven't won in the league for a month, their confidence is shot at the moment and, to make things worse, Tottenham are above them!
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-2 (Sky Bet odds: 12/1)
Betting
Arsenal are 11/10 with Sky Bet to get back to winning ways with a victory at Bournemouth (5/2), with another stalemate for Wenger's men a 12/5 chance.
A run of three draws and a defeat from their last four Premier League games has seen the Gunners drift out from even-money favourites for the title to 3/1. The Cherries' odds having been drifting in a more positive sense over recent weeks, with their relegation price now 14/1 after collecting seven points from the last nine available.
Olivier Giroud heads the first goalscorer at 9/2, while Afobe is 6/1 to extend his three-match scoring streak by breaking the deadlock.
