Newcastle moved out of the bottom three after Ayoze Perez's first-half strike handed Steve McClaren's side a 1-0 victory at Bournemouth in the Premier League.

In a game where the visitors had just two shots in the entire match, Bournemouth dominated from the first whistle to the last but were made to pay when Perez's shot - Newcastle's only effort on target - found the back of the net in the 27th minute.

Eddie Howe's side continued to push forward in search of an equaliser but found Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot, who shook off a thigh injury to take his place in the starting line-up, in inspired form as he produced save after save to help his side earn their first away win in 12 top-flight matches.

Newcastle held on for a valuable three points to move up into 16th, while Bournemouth, who will be left wondering how they did not get anything from the game, replace the Magpies in the bottom three.

Bournemouth made two changes from the side which lost 2-0 at Southampton with Glenn Murray and Marc Pugh being replaced by Junior Stanislas and Josh King.

And it was King who nearly gave the home side the perfect start, stinging the palms of Elliot with a fierce shot from just inside the penalty area in the fourth minute.

Howe's men continued to attack and seven minutes later King was in the action again, nearly latching onto the ball after Chancel Mbemba's poor touch, only for quick-thinking Elliot to make another crucial intervention.

It was another wasted opportunity and the home side were made to pay in the 27th minute when Perez raced on to a Georginio Wijnaldum flick before beating Adam Federici from the edge of the penalty area with his side's only shot of the half.

Bournemouth responded well to going a goal down and could have been on level terms in the 35th minute but for another save from the inspired Elliot, who got down low to his right to push away King's glancing header from Matt Ritchie's free-kick.

Adam Smith was next to go close for the hosts as his powerful drive clipped the top of the crossbar before Elliot made another superb save to keep out Dan Gosling's header from close range just before the break.

It was much the same after the interval with Elliot at it again within 30 seconds of the restart, tipping over Ritchie's header from 12 yards.

Bournemouth were dominant but just could not find the back of the net as Harry Arter, Gosling and Stanislas all failing to hit the target with efforts.

In the 64th minute, there were shouts for a penalty by Bournemouth fans as Andrew Surman went  down under a challenge from Mbemba in the box in a similar incident to the one which saw Coloccino see red and give away a penalty against Sunderland two weeks ago. However, on this occasion Lee Mason saw nothing wrong with the challenge.

Howe freshened things up with a double change with 17 minutes left on the clock as Lee Tomlin and Yann Kermorgant replaced King and Stanislas but the frustration continued for the home side as the game petered towards its conclusion.

Six additional minutes rallied Bournemouth slightly and they created one final chance for Ritchie but Elliot made on final save as Newcastle clung on for a victory to boost their bid to ease away from the relegation zone.
