Bury v Sunderland preview: Robbin Ruiter in line for Black Cats debut
Friday 11 August 2017 08:15, UK
Goalkeeper Robbin Ruiter is in line for his Sunderland debut as they travel to Bury in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
The Dutch stopper joined the club this summer, with manager Simon Grayson revealing that the 30-year-old is in contention to start the game, which will be shown live on Sky Sports Football.
"He'll [Ruiter] be in the squad. We've got to try him sometime," he told the Shields Gazette. "I know if I put Robbin in on Thursday he won't let us down, but I could keep Jason [Steele] in to help the consistency of team selection and developing understandings with people."
Grayson will be without the injured Duncan Watmore, Jack Rodwell, Paddy McNair and Donald Love for the trip to Gigg Lane although Bryan Oviedo is back in training after picking up an injury on international duty over the summer.
Aside from this, Sunderland have no new injury worries and Thursday's match could see a second Black Cats appearance for James Vaughan, who signed from Bury last month.
The Shakers will be without Jay O'Shea for the next six weeks after he suffered a medial ligament injury against Walsall at the weekend.
He will join Eoghan O'Connell and Nathan Cameron in the treatment room, while manager Lee Clark will be hoping new strikeforce Jermaine Beckford and Nicky Ajose can find the net against their Championship opponents.
Opta stats
This is Sunderland's first appearance in round one since 2006/07, which ended in a 2-0 loss to their opponents Bury. It was Niall Quinn's last game in charge as manager.
That match in August 2006 saw both sides receive a red card - Arnau Riera was sent off for Sunderland while John Fitzgerald was shown a second yellow for his goal celebrations.
The Shakers haven't kept a clean sheet in the competition since beating Sunderland in 2006, going 14 matches without one.
Both teams have scored in Bury's last six EFL Cup games at this stage.
